'We must protect our children from pedophiles and predators': Ruto says amid Echoes of War drama

President William Ruto speaks during a church service in Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County on April 13, 2025.

President William Ruto has berated former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, the playwright behind Butere Girls' play Echoes of War, citing that his administration will protect children from negative antics at all costs.

In the last couple of weeks. the play has elicited debate over its theme, which is centred on a Gen Z nation rising against an oppressive government, a script that some argue references the Ruto administration.

Speaking during the National Drama and Film Festival State Concert at State House in Nakuru County, the president instructed parents, teachers and other stakeholders to protect the children from opportunists who 'corrupt' their minds to serve selfish interests.

Ruto set aside his usual off-the-cuff humour and adopted a stern tone, signalling serious consequences for his detractors.

"I must say this as a leader and a parent, equally, we must protect our children from pedophiles, drug peddlers and predators who want to corrupt our children," the president noted.

"We must say no to people who want to corrupt our children with negative ethnicity and negative politics. We are a great nation and there's more to celebrate as Kenyans than the negativity that some of us want to drive and that I will firmly stand by.

"I will not allow this nation to go down the drain for the people pursuing their selfish and narrow interests."

Malala, who was once the Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) before his ouster, has been accused of using the play to settle political scores with Ruto.

He, however, refuted the claims and accused the government of stifling the freedom of expression

"Ruto is the only person with a problem with this play, He is afraid of being told the truth. The play tells you the ills of the government and what the Gen Zs are crying about," Malala said on April 10, 2025, shortly after being released from police custody.
