‘We had not seen the man before,’ Pastor Kanyari speaks as slain sister Starlet Wahu is buried
City pastor Victor Kanyari has
opened up about the tragic death of his 24-year-old sister Starlet Wahu, who
was found brutally murdered on Thursday at an AirBnB in South B.
The
popular socialite Wahu’s lifeless
body was discovered lying in a pool of blood inside the
apartment after a night of merry with now identified prime suspect, 34-year-old
John Matara.
Pastor
Kanyari has now disclosed that the family had not met the man caught on CCTV cameras
in the tragic incident that has since hit headlines.
“We
had not seen the man before. We learned about him after her death. This is so tragic
for us, the family, and even her friends. May her soul rest in peace,” Pastor
Kanyari told the Nairobi News.
He
expressed shock over the tragedy as he recalled the last time he saw his sister
on New Year’s Eve during a family get-together.
“I
am heartbroken; she was doing so well in life. We last met on Christmas, and on
December 31, we spent time together at home,” the preacher stated.
Wahu
was laid to rest on Saturday, January 6, at her parents’ home in Kamulu area of
Ruai, Nairobi County.
She died after reportedly
being stabbed on the head and the right thigh during the incident.
Matara
was arrested and is being detained as police continue with investigations on
the dreadful Thursday incident.
Video
footage captured Wahu and Matara entering the Papino Apartments block before
disembarking on the fourth floor and proceeding to their room which they had
reportedly rented for a night.
The
maimed body of Wahu would later be found inside the apartment after the AirBnB’s
owner, Florence Ngina, told authorities that Matara hastily left the premises
on Thursday morning wearing blood-stained clothes.
Ngina
is said to have received the information from a security guard manning the
apartments, quickly rushing to the scene where she discovered that the
apartment had been locked from the outside.
Using
a spare key, Ngina gained access to the apartment only to discover Wahu’s body in the living room.
She subsequently filed the report at South B
police station, prompting DCI officers to proceed to the scene of the crime.
Police
reports indicate that there were signs of a struggle between Wahu and her
killer, as the scene appeared bloody, disarrayed and chaotic.
Police
likewise discovered HIV testing kits, used condoms, bhang, a bottle of alcohol
and a blood-stained kitchen knife, believed to be the murder weapon, at the
scene.
