[VIDEO] Elderly men in Meru turn to Ajua to stay active and reconnect with peers after retirement
Some elderly men from Meru have reinvented the traditional
Ajua game into an exciting annual competition. The senior citizens have formed
teams and meet in a formal competition complete with prizes, trophy, referees
and spectators.
The tournament was initiated by a retired civil servant to
help the older men reconnect and unwind as peers. He bought the trophy and
provides the prize money.
There are strict rules for participants to abide by that
include; neatness, be in marriage, no smoking and alcoholism.
The old men say that Ajua was popular in Meru traditions for
centuries. However, the game has lost fortunes among the younger generation.
The men want to revive the game and make it their means of
remaining active after retiring.
