Officers from the veterinary board of Kenya, in collaboration with police, have launched a crackdown in Kisii County, targeting livestock drug shops, especially those linked to the sale of narcotic substances that pose a threat to both human and animal life.

The officers, who are deployed to different parts of the county, pitched camp in Masimba, Keumbu, and Kisii towns on Friday, issuing a stern warning to those selling drugs without authorisation, vowing to take legal action against violators in accordance with the law.

The operation also aims to arrest quack veterinary practitioners operating without a valid certification approved by the board.

“This is an operation across the country. Anyone trading in veterinary medicines must have a practice license from the Kenya Veterinary Board and a permit from the Veterinary Medicines Directorate. That is non-negotiable,” Dr. Benson Kibore, Chief Inspector, Veterinary Board of Kenya, said.

Authorities are also keen on charging employers who hire individuals not registered with the board, citing the public health risks posed by malpractice in the veterinary field.

“Illegal practice in this sector endangers the lives of the population. When unqualified individuals sell veterinary drugs or operate illegally, they compromise food safety, making it unsafe for human consumption,” Dr. James Ogachi, Deputy Director of Livestock Services in Kisii, added.

The board has vowed to take legal action against all violators in accordance with Kenyan law.
