Veteran journalist Mutegi Njau laid to rest in Tharaka Nithi
Mutegi Njau, known for his pioneering role in modern journalism and his impactful tenure at Citizen TV's morning show "CHECHE," was celebrated for his unwavering professionalism and mentorship of numerous budding journalists across the country.
Governor Muthomi Njuki, among others, highlighted Njau's distinguished career, noting his pivotal role as one of the pioneers of NTV in 1999 and his extensive experience dating back to the 1960s in newspapers such as the Kenya Times and the Daily Nation.
“Mutegi was no-nonsense in shaping the careers of those young people who had just completed university. I can tell you, Mutegi has impacted all those TV journalists you see; he has touched them, he has shaped them, all those news anchors you see, he has shaped them all,” said Lucy Kaburia, a former Nation Media Group employee.
Stephen Letoo of Citizen TV, who was also present, said Mutegi was “a very instrumental person to us who were staff in the Royal Media Services.”
“Akitupatia the trainings every morning, he could come and go through some of our scripts, so we are so much grateful having gone through his hands,” said Letoo.
Governor Njuki, speaking at the burial, emphasized the importance of NHIF amidst recent legal developments affecting the new health scheme, urging Kenyans to continue utilizing NHIF services to ensure uninterrupted healthcare provision, crucial for the nation's progress.
“Mutegi is one person who interacted on all levels and, in honesty, it doesn’t matter who you are. Ata kama wewe ni ndugu yake, atakuambia ukweli. Tafadhali, usikutwe hapo bila cover. Continue paying the NHIF because ukigonjeka, that is the only one which can pay for you,” said Governor Njuki.
Mutegi Njau was laid to rest in the Ndagani area of Chuka Igambang'ombe constituency, marking the end of a chapter in Kenyan journalism honoured for its integrity and influence.
