Ushiriki Wema expands mission to empower women, youth entrepreneurs

Ushiriki Wema Women & Youth Empowerment Chief Executive and Programs Director Sintoyia Kasaine speaks during the breakfast meeting on January 29, 2024.

Ushiriki Wema, an economic empowerment programme, is now set to elevate women and youth entrepreneurs by providing essential resources, advocacy, and networking opportunities.

The initiative operates under the broader Ushiriki Wema Initiative umbrella, a brainchild of the spouse of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, Tessie Musalia.

Ushiriki Wema Women & Youth Empowerment Chief Executive and Programs Director Sintoyia Kasaine emphasized their commitment to expanding outreach efforts beyond existing programs that currently support the elderly, persons with disabilities, maternal and child health initiatives, environmental conservation, health, and sanitation.

“We are now focused on elevating women and youth. I want to take a moment to express our appreciation to each of our partners,” Kasaine stated.

“Your commitment to our mission, demonstrated through your support and collaboration, is the reason we have made significant progress in uplifting lives and building resilient communities.”

On Wednesday, the initiative hosted a stakeholders’ breakfast meeting to strengthen partnerships in the empowerment programs.

The event welcomed new partners, including Equity Group, Huduma Kenya under the Ministry of Public Service and Human Capital Development, Ajira Digital and KEPSA under the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, as well as Fanaka Network, a tech solutions and data management entity.

Kasaine highlighted that the programme will be driven by a shared vision, equipping these groups with the necessary tools to navigate challenges and unlock new opportunities that foster innovation and job creation.

“These two sets of members within our society are key drivers of the country’s economic growth. What we want to see is an impactful change that will touch lives by empowering women and youth to live dignified lives,” she stated.

She underscored the power of collaboration in achieving lasting change:

“The shared vision is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve together through aligned efforts toward a common goal for the betterment of our communities. The unwavering commitment from our existing partners and those who have joined us is a clear indication of a venture geared toward transforming lives and building a just society for all. As Ushiriki Wema, we deeply value the support we receive daily and look forward to engaging more like-minded partners in this cause.”

Ushiriki Wema Women & Youth Empowerment will prioritize supporting business owners by offering essential resources, advocacy, and networking opportunities.

Additionally, the programme will work to empower women and youth entrepreneurs, fostering sustainable economic growth while positioning them as global leaders in innovation, inclusivity, and business excellence.

“We will be advocating for a conducive commercial, trade, and investment environment that supports the expansion and success of women- and youth-led enterprises. Our goal is to elevate the stature of women entrepreneurs, enhance their access to local and international markets, and facilitate meaningful connections with financial institutions and development partners,” Kasaine affirmed.

She further emphasized their youth-focused initiatives:

“For the youth, our core mandate will be to engage, educate, and elevate them in embracing digital innovation, enhancing financial literacy, and forging strategic partnerships—paving the way to combat unemployment and address youth marginalization effectively.”

Key stakeholders present at the meeting included Charity Nkirote, Senior Manager for Women and Youth Banking at Equity Group; Elizabeth Rop, Senior Director at Fanaka Networks; Fauziya Mbarak, Private Sector Engagement Specialist at Ajira Digital; and Ben Kai Chílumo, CEO of Huduma Kenya.
