US Embassy tells Americans to keep off Kenya's protest zones over safety concerns

Kenyan President William Ruto announced on July 11, 2024 the dismissal of almost his entire cabinet as part of measures undertaken following widespread anti-government protests that turned deadly. He said the move with immediate effect affected all ministers except prime cabinet secretary and foreign minister Musalia Mudavadi and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The United States Embassy in Kenya has issued a security advisory to American citizens, citing ongoing protests in several cities across the country.

The embassy warned its citizens that protests are likely on Tuesdays and Thursdays, particularly in central business districts and major thoroughfares.

The embassy advises US citizens to monitor local media for road conditions, avoid crowds, and keep vehicle doors and windows locked.

They also recommend informing friends and family 'of your whereabouts, reviewing personal security plans, and carrying a copy of your US passport and current Kenyan visa'.

These initially peaceful protests have frequently turned violent, resulting in injuries and fatalities, with at least 43 killed, according to Rights Group figures.

The agitation began in response to the Finance Bill 2024 and has since taken many forms, including calls for the Kenya Kwanza administration's resignation.

President Ruto responded to the protests by withdrawing the contentious Bill, proposing austerity measures, and dismissing his entire cabinet, including the Attorney General.

The Head of State accused the US-based Ford Foundation of sponsoring "anarchy" and funding anti-government protests that turned deadly last month.

"Those behind sponsoring the chaos in the Republic of Kenya, shame on them because they are sponsoring violence against our democratic nation," Ruto said at an event in Nakuru

"I want to ask the people of Ford Foundation, that money they are giving out to sponsor violence, how are they going to benefit," Ruto told a large crowd gathered to hear him speak.
