University of Eldoret students turned away as new dress code takes effect
Students at the University of Eldoret,
Uasin Gishu were treated to a shock on Monday following a new dress code policy
introduced by the University.
Tens of students who showed up to the
institution were sent back home for non-compliance with the dress code
How one was dressed determined whether or
not they could be admitted into the lecture halls.
Many who were caught by surprise termed the
move unfair
“I have been turned away because of my
dress code and currently I have no money to buy new clothes,” said Philip
Maritim.
Another student, Denis Kiplagat recognised
that the new dress code rules were good, but asked the university to give them
more time to conform.
Some of the learners are in support of the
institution's decision to enforce a dressing policy for learners in the school.
“You find a lady dressed in a miniskirt and
‘tumbo cut’, and she is in class, getting all attention, “Stephen Maina said.
“I am okay with the new dressing code and
encourage my follow students to follow and do the same,” another student, Edna
Moraa said.
The internal memo seen by Citizen Digital warned
learners of disciplinary action for wearing what the school termed as
inappropriate clothes.
For female students mini skirts are among
the banned attires while male students with ragged or ripped trousers will not
access the institutions.
The memo also requires that learners
maintain gender compliant attires which should reflect their personal details
as documented in their admission records.
