Union wants KRA to scrap tax exemption renewal for persons with disabilities
The Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) has urged the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to quash a legal notice decreeing that persons with disability have to renew certificates of tax exemption after every three years.
Speaking at his office in Narok, KUSNET
Secretary James Torome labeled the requirement as unjust, further highlighting the
financial burden and demeaning nature of this process for people living with
disabilities.
"When this certificate is not renewed , persons with disabilities who are employed especially by the government will lose around 16% of their basic salary," Torome told Citizen TV.
"The government is supposed to assist people with disabilities but it is humiliating them. The challenges they face when trying to acquire these certificates is just too much. They have to go the hospitals near locations and then they have to wait to be invited to Westlands where the national council offices for persons with disabilities are located."
The union is now calling on Members of
Parliament in the Labour and Education Committee to intervene in the matter.
