UDA Treasurer Nyakundi slams Senator Onyonka for rejecting presidential dinner invite

A leadership rift is brewing in Kisii County after Senator Richard Onyonka openly rejected an invitation to President William Ruto’s State New Year’s Eve Dinner at the Kisii State Lodge, citing dissatisfaction with the government’s performance.

Kitutu Chache North MP Japheth Nyakundi, who also serves as the UDA Party Treasurer, criticized Senator Onyonka for his decision, accusing him of double standards. Nyakundi lambasted Onyonka for what he termed as political insincerity.

"It is absurd for elected leaders to speak from two parts of their mouth, that in State House you praise and give His Excellency accolades, but for convenience, you dance to the gallery," said Nyakundi. "Hii tabia tuiwache na 2024. 2025 tuwe wangwana."

Onyonka, however, stood firm in his stance, issuing a strongly worded statement outlining his reasons for boycotting the event. He expressed dissatisfaction with President Ruto’s administration, particularly its handling of key issues such as abductions, corruption, and the violation of citizens’ rights.

“It’s unconscionable to celebrate with pomp and color while countless Kenyan families are grieving and searching for their loved ones,” stated Senator Onyonka. “This year has been one of immense pain and turmoil, especially for young Kenyans who have been victims of abductions and arbitrary arrests.”

The Senator accused the government of ignoring public calls for justice and unity, alleging that the President has failed to fulfill his constitutional obligations to protect all Kenyans.

As the year draws to a close, Onyonka called for the release of detained youths and urged the government to address systemic issues afflicting the nation.

The Senator’s boycott could heighten political tensions in Kisii County with President Ruto’s visit to Kisii seen as significant for strengthening ties with local leaders.
