Uasin Gishu employs 1,287 ECDE teachers on permanent basis

Uasin Gishu county has employed 1,287 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, after a ten-year wait.

The ECDE teachers have been teaching at least 26,000 pre-primary children in 653 centres as temporary workers since 2013.

Governor Jonathan Bii said the employment of the teachers on permanent terms is aimed at motivating them and promoting quality early childhood education.

Following the appointment, the ECDE teachers’ pay was raised from Ksh.13,000 to Ksh.30,000 basic salary per month for diploma holders and Sh51,000 for graduates, the governor announced.

Among the newly-appointed ECDE teachers were at least 20 graduate tutors on Job Group K, who have been teaching Pre-primary one (PP1) and Pre-primary two (PP2) children across the county.

Mr Bii said the appointments had been delayed by a misunderstanding between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the county administration on the recruitment procedures and schemes of service for the ECDE teachers.
