Uasin Gishu County gov’t on the spot as DCI launches probe into Finland scholarship saga
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal
Investigations (DCI) have initiated an inquiry into allegations of fraudulent
activities pertaining to a scholarship programme to Finland organized by the
Uasin Gishu County government.
The DCI sleuths launched investigations following
complaints by many Uasin Gishu residents who purport to have been swindled by
the facilitators of the so-called scholarship programme.
"Sleuths from DCI Headquarters are expected in
Uasin Gishu County between July 18-21, for a comprehensive probe," the
State agency said in a statement.
"All aggrieved victims are requested to
present themselves at the DCI County Headquarters in Eldoret, on July 18 for
statement recording and other investigative procedures in order to bring the
suspects to book."
The victims have been advised to bring any
documents related to the matter.
Uasin Gishu
Governor Jonathan Bii has since distanced himself from the Finland scholarship saga,
saying his predecessor and current Senator Jackson Mandago should come out and
explain what happened.
Addressing
the press in Eldoret town on Tuesday, Bii said no one should involve him in any
emerging scam, and that those involved in swindling the scholarship funds
should carry their cross.
According to
the Governor, the programme was managed by an independent fund known as Uasin
Gishu Overseas Education Trust, and not the county government per se; a
discovery he said he made when he took office in August 2022.
