Two police officers accused of killing a suspect while in custody in Matungulu, Machakos County, have pleaded not guilty to the offence of murder.

Erick Odhiambo Amollo and Cornelius Ndambuki Munyao, were on Wednesday arraigned before Justice George Odunga in Machakos.

Justice Odunga said the medical report shows that both the police officers are mentally fit to stand trial.

The two were released on a bond of Ksh.500,000 each and sureties of similar amounts, and are presently being detained at the Machakos GK Prisons.

The case will be mentioned on July 7, 2021 for pre-trial at the same court.

Odhiambo and Ndambuki, who are attached to the KBC Police Station in Matungulu, are accused of killing Mark Lumbasi Natala who died at the station on March 9, 2021.

An inquiry was opened into the incident and investigation commenced, which was later taken over by the Machakos CCIO.

Upon completion, the CCIO forwarded the file to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in Machakos who then advised that the two officers be charged with the offence of murder.
