Two people killed, 15 others injured in clashes on Kisumu - Kericho border
Fresh chaos erupted in Sondu along the Kisumu
- Kericho border on Thursday following a long standing boundary conflict
between the two counties.
Two people died while 15 others sustained
injuries on Wednesday as the anti-government protests spilled over into a
boundary conflict between Kisumu and Kericho counties.
At the Nyabondo mission hospital, five people
were admitted with gunshot wounds, 3 with critical stab wounds, and 4 others
were brought in with arrows lodged in different parts of their bodies.
Collins Ouma, a
resident of Nyabondo, said: Sikuwa Sondu tangu morning, nilienda tu jioni
nikidhani kelele zote zimeisha...wakati nikirudi waka ni-time kwa barabara,
watu sita, mmoja akaanza kurusha nikalala kama mwenye ameshadungwa tayari...kidogo
nikasimama nikaanza kukimbia ndio nikadungwa sasa hiyo ya sita.”
At the Sigowet sub-county hospital, one
person succumbed to an arrow wound allegedly inflicted during the protests at
Sondu.
Three others are being treated at the same
facility after they were attacked by a group of rowdy youth.
Kericho County Commissioner Michael Lesimam
confirmed the incident expressing confidence of containing the chaos from
escalating further.
“We are monitoring
the situation today...we are expecting that it will not be as bad as yesterday
but we have enough police officers there and we will back them if need be,”
said Lesimam.
Sondu market has been hit by intermittent
clashes over the years, as the Kisumu and Kericho counties differ over location
of the boundary which demarcates the two counties.
