Two people arrested for heckling during President Ruto’s Bomet tour
Police in Bomet have arrested two
suspects in connection with the heckling and booing during a presidential
function in the county on Saturday last week.
Addressing the press on Tuesday, Bomet County
Commissioner Ahmed Omar said the two were nabbed in their hideouts and are
currently being interrogated by security agencies.
Omar said three other known persons are being
sought by the police over the same.
"We are not sparing anyone on this. The Internal
Security Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki was clear concerning the financiers
and politicians who orchestrated the ugly scene, we are summoning even elected
leaders so long as they are suspected to be part of the organizers" added the
County Commissioner.
President Ruto’s tour of Bomet on Saturday was
characterized by chaos after a section of the area residents publicly heckled Governor Hilary Barchok.
The visibly agitated Head of State called for order and
restraint as he lectured the residents for booing the county boss in his
presence.
Ruto, while attempting to calm the unruly residents,
urged them to be patient and utilize their power at the ballot during the next
election in a bid to hold non-performing leaders accountable.
A similar scene had been witnessed just a day
earlier when the President visited Kericho and Governor Dr. Erick Mutai was booed as he rose to address the crowd.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki has
since called for the arrest and prosecution of those involved in heckling
during political gatherings.
In a statement made while on a tour of Kericho
County on Monday, Kindiki ordered security agencies to move swiftly and rein in on disorder during political meetings.
