Two Maasai Mara University students drown in Enkare-Narok River
A Narok County multi-agency team and the
Kenya Red Cross have launched efforts to recover the bodies of two Maasai Mara
University students who drowned in the Enkare-Narok River.
The river burst its banks overnight following
hours of heavy rainfall that is being witnessed countrywide.
Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Loltiatia, who
visited the various points of the river bank, said the two were curious about
the raging waters before fate struck.
“They
were two youths who were trying to cross to the other side but instead passed
through an impassable section. There is a bridge but it seems they became just
curious to know the extent of the river’s overflow…one of them tripped and as
the partner was trying to help him, he fell and they were swept away,”
Loltiatia explained.
He
also warned members of the public to desist from throwing trash into the CBD
drainages which he said block and trigger floods.
“Tuwache
kutupa taka katika mitaro ya sewage ambayo maji inapita kwa sababu mkifanya
hivyo, ndio maana mnaona maji yanaleta balaa,” he said.
He
further called on everyone to be vigilant, more so families living in low ends
which are prone to flooding to move to higher grounds.
