The incident happened at around 8 pm, where two children aged 4 months and 4 years were burnt beyond recognition.
According to the police, the mother of the two children had gone to the market to buy supper when the incident happened.
Kagumo residents and firefighters from the County Government of Kirinyaga had difficulty putting out the fire. "Two children have died during the incident, but several people were left homeless," Jane Wanjiku said.
Area MCA David Kinyua Wangui, who arrived at the scene immediately, said over 20 rented wooden houses were reduced to ashes. "We are appealing for help as they have slept in the cold," Kinyua said.
Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Alasow said the fire started in one of the affected houses before spreading quickly to other wooden houses.
"The cause of the fire has not yet been established. We have launched investigations," the county commissioner said.
The two bodies burnt beyond recognition were taken to Kerugoya Mortuary.
