Two brothers recover from malnutrition in Turkana

Two brothers in Loima village, Turkana County
who were severely malnourished and on the brink of death due to the ongoing
drought are in recovery and making good progress towards regaining full health.
The two, Apus and Apua aged 13 and 9
respectively, were so emaciated and could not stand or walk on their own but
now they are up on their feet, thanks to well-wishers who came to their rescue
and donated food and other items.
Two weeks ago when Citizen TV highlighted their plight, Apus and Apua could not stand, or walk; for 3 weeks the two had not had
a single meal, they were on the verge of death.
After the sad story ran, well-wishers came
knocking on their door, bearing food and medical aid for the brothers, an act
of benevolence that literally saved their lives. Apua can now walk.
“Sisi tunashukuru wanahabari kuangazia
haya, tunajua kama si wanahabari na michael hallonda, hawa watoto hata
wangepoteza maisha yao, kama si hao hata president hangekuja Turkana,” Chris
Kobia, one of the well-wishers said.
“Hawa
watoto wawili tumeona tremendous improvement kwa maisha yao ,saizi wanaweza
tembea ,wamepata nyama na pia wanakimbia, hii inamaanisha much can be done,"another
well-wisher, Bakari Wamala, said.
For the next couple of years, they are not only
assured of meals, but their education has also been catered for, up to
university level.
Josphat Aupe, a resident thanked the generous
Kenyans for their help, saying that the beneficiaries would in turn help the
community.
“Tunashukuru sana Abdul kwa kusaidia kusomesha
hawa watoto, sisi hatukuwa na pesa ya kuwasomesha hawa wakipata Elimu watarudi
kusaidia hii kijiji,” he said.
Out of the 5.1 million Kenyans affected by
hunger, more than 4 million live in the arid and semi-arid regions of northern
and eastern Kenya.
An estimated 942,000 children aged under-5 and
135,000 pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers are acutely malnourished and
in need of treatment.
