Two arrested in raid targeting illegal internet providers in Nairobi, Kiambu

Two people have been arrested following a sting operation targeting illegal Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Kiambu and Nairobi Counties.

The operation, led by the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) in conjunction with local police, led to the seizure of computers and phones used by the suspects to infringe on premium content.

The devices have since been forwarded to the Police Cybercrime Unit for processing.

The Partners Against Piracy (PAP) Association of Kenya has since commended KECOBO for the operation noting that the ISPs not only violated intellectual property rights but also undercut legitimate businesses that rely on revenue from legal distribution channels.

"The actions of the illegal ISPs undermine the development of a healthy digital market, driving away investment and diminishing the growth prospects of the technology and entertainment sectors," said PAP in a statement.

"Beyond the immediate economic consequences, these events highlight a troubling trend in the proliferation of cybercrime within Kenya. The illegal actions of these ISPs undermine the legal framework, social trust, and can lead to a general perception of lawlessness within the digital space."

PAP added that the operation was a 'significant step towards protecting the integrity of the creative industry, the economic prosperity of Kenya, and upholding the rule of law'.
