Two arrested in Eldoret for posing as CCTV agents, conning locals using M-Pesa

Two suspects have been arrested in Eldoret town for defrauding locals in several towns of Baringo using M-Pesa.

Police commander Julius Kiragu confirmed the arrest saying police made a chase from Kabarnet To Eldoret town where they managed to catch up with the two suspects. 

The duo, John Abuyo and Brian Masire are said to have defrauded residents of Koriema, Kabarnet, and Elgeyo-Marakwet using M-Pesa. 

 “Huyu Obuya anasema alisomea mambo ya CCTV na anaishi Mombasa, that’s the language anatumia time ana con watu. So this week walianza upande wa Emining wakaenda kwa duka fulani wakasema wanataka ku install CCTV,” Kiragu explained.

“Huyu kijana akawaambia duka si yake so akapigia mwenye duka wakasema waongee na yeye, so wakabadilisha jina ya mwenye duka wakaweka yao wakajifanya wanaongea na mwenye duka kumbe wanaongea na mwizi mwenzao, wakamwambia atume pesa. So wakaweza kupata elfu kumi na nane.”

Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Stephen on his part warned the public to be careful when carrying out transactions and ensure they report such matters to the police. 

“Hivi visa vimekua vingi katika kaunti yetu na tumekua tukiwafuata hawa vijana kupitia ushirikiano wetu na maafisa wa usalama hapa na pia kaunti ya Uasin Gishu ambao wameweza kutusaidia ili tukaweza kuwa shika,” Kutwo said.

The two culprits are scheduled to be arraigned on Monday.
