Two arrested as detectives net bhang worth 9.4 million in Diani

Two suspects are in police custody following a swoop by detectives that saw bhang worth an estimated Ksh. 9,421,500 netted.

The main suspect in the illegal trade, Irene Auma, was arrested alongside her accomplice Hamisi Omar at corner ya Chief area in Diani, Kwale County.

The operation was conducted by a team of detectives drawn from the anti-narcotics unit and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

"Following a crucial tip-off, the officers swiftly apprehended a suspect Hamisi Omar, who led them to a nearby drug store where they uncovered 10 sacks of Marijuana weighing 314.05kgs with an approximate street value of Ksh.9, 421, 500," police said.

The authorities added that the pursuit led to the arrest of Auma, aged 30, in a nearby house.

In a similar operation, officers seized sacks of unrolled bhang with a street value of Ksh.1,749,000.

At least 30 jerrycans of illicit brew (chang’aa) valued at approximately Ksh. 240,000 were recovered following the operation at Luore shopping Centre in Rusinga West, Homa Bay County.

Police are searching for the main suspect Kevin Barasa, alias Kevo, who escaped the dragnet. "The arrested traffickers are currently in police custody, and the recovered narcotics are being kept as exhibits," police added.
