Dozens of
traders in the Juakali area in Kisumu are counting losses after a fire broke
out following day-long running battles between anti-government protestors and the
police.
According to
reports, the cause of the fire still remains unknown, with both the police and protestors
trading blame over the same.
The afternoon
inferno left behind a trail of destruction as a multitude of shops were razed
down.
A handful of
the traders however managed to salvage their wares by accessing their shops
before the fire spread.
Others who were
away were unlucky since several of the shops were burnt down as police officers
stood at a distance.
Kisumu City
firefighters rushed to the scene and tried to put out the fire and also deter
it from spreading further.
A water cannon
belonging to the General Service Unit (GSU) later joined in to help put out the
fire.
Most businesses were shut down and property
destroyed across the nation for the better part of Wednesday as the Azimio la
Umoja One Kenya protesters engaged in running battles with anti-riot police
officers.
Police
officers were forced to lob teargas canisters at protesters in a bid to
disperse the rowdy crowds.
