Three suspected fraudsters arrested with Ksh.155M in fake US dollars
Police in Kilimani have arrested three suspected serial
fraudsters who attempted to swindle one of their victims with 1.2 million fake
US Dollars (Ksh.155.4 million).
The three Rafael Ojiambo,
Samuel Ayako and Wilfred Gitonga were nabbed along Nyerere Road onboard a
Toyota NZE vehicle while handing over a safe containing the fake dollars in
exchange for clean cash.
“The three, who had
already begun counting their luck, were stopped in their tracks while handing
over a safe containing 1.2 million fake US Dollars to the victim in an attempt
to obtain clean money. The malefactors had previously obtained Ksh.4.3 million
from another honest Kenyan,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)
said in a statement.
“A Toyota NZE Reg. No. KBN
101D that was ferrying the safe containing the fake Dollars was impounded, and
so was the safe and its contents which have been kept as exhibits.”
Following the arrest, the
three were arraigned in Milimani Chief Magistrate’s Court where custodial
orders were granted for them to be detained at Kilimani Police Station until
January 27, 2025.
The DCI has since implored
the public to be on the lookout for such get-rich-quick schemes used to defraud
them.
“Investigations have
revealed that some victims have lost their valuables including houses and
vehicles that were placed as collaterals in exchange for hard cash that is
eventually lost to the criminals, with victims being left with nothing to show
but millions of fake dollars,” DCI warned.
