Thika Municipality has begun its journey towards conferment of
city status, following the unanimous adoption of a report by the County
Assembly of Kiambu.
While tabling the report, Planning Committee Chairperson Moses
Ngatha indicated that the municipality had attained the required threshold to
become an industrial smart city, including the attainment of targeted revenues
over the years.
The MCAs also pointed out the benefits that will come with the
conferment, which include the attraction of more businesses to the town.
The report will proceed to the Senate for review and, if
approved, Thika will become the sixth city after Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu,
Nakuru, and Eldoret.
"This assembly wishes to confer the status of city to
Thika Municipality. Will as many of a similar opinion say aye, with as many
with a contrary opinion say nay? The ayes have it," said John Njiru,
Deputy Speaker.
"It is our dream to make the entire Kiambu County a city.
But since Rome was not made in a day, we start by making Thika Municipality a
city. And perhaps, Honorable Speaker, the entire dream of making Kiambu a city
will be actualized," noted Peter Mburu, MCA for Kamenu.
"Even if we will not be able to give each and every
person, a member in this House, a chance to contribute, Mr. Speaker, I want to
confirm that this is an issue that we have had as a House to look into
deeply," pointed out Godfrey Mucheke, Majority Leader, Kiambu County
Assembly.
"And we have reached here, Mr. Speaker, because we are in
agreement that we need Thika to be a Thika smart city, Mr. Speaker."
