The real ‘Mama Pishori’: DCI fetes Mwea rice seller who used drink-spiking scandal to push business

They say never let the opportunity pass you, grab it as soon as you can, and that is precisely what Monica, a Mwea-based rice seller did when stories about women robbing men by spiking their drinks hit the headlines.

And for her out of the box thinking, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has made her one of their community ambassadors in the fight against crime in the country.

It was a chance encounter that helped Monica, a rice seller at Top Grade Rice Millers in Mwea, along the Nairobi-Embu highway, meet the DCI detectives and pushed her to prominence.

“Our detectives on routine duties met Mama Pishori, who is one of our biggest followers, busy at work at Top Grade Rice Millers in Mwea, along the Nairobi-Embu highway,” stated the DCI in a statement on Wednesday.

“Mama Pishori whose real name is Monica, took advantage of our exclusive coverage on how men’s drinks were being spiked in popular joints across the country, in what is locally known as ‘Kuwekewa Pishori,’ to advertise her business.”

Impressed by her ingenuity to market her business, the detectives visited Monica to show their appreciation and just to be sure, decided the test the rice she was selling.

“And yes we have approved Monica’s rice as 100% pure pishori rice and encourage our readership using the Embu-Nairobi Highway to visit Top Grade Rice Millers and promote our local farmers,” the investigations agency said.

Once they determined that her rice is legitimate, the sleuths also made her an ambassador.

“Monica becomes one of our community ambassadors in the fight against crime in the country,” added the DCI.
