Popular matatu operator Super Metro Sacco has received a green light to resume operations after the Transport Licensing Appeals Board vacated an earlier suspension order that had temporarily halted the company’s services.
In a ruling delivered on Thursday, the
Appeals Board directed the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to
file and serve any remaining issues related to SuperMetro’s compliance within
seven days. The Sacco has also been ordered to respond to those issues within
seven days of being served.
“The order issued on 14th April 2025
suspending the appellant’s operations is hereby vacated,” the Board stated in
its official order. “The appellant shall be at liberty to immediately resume
operations in due compliance with the law.”
The tribunal further ordered that its
decision be served upon the Inspector General of the National Police Service to
ensure enforcement and awareness among law enforcement officers.
The case is scheduled for further hearing
on 2nd May 2025.
The National Transport and Safety Authority
(NTSA) had earlier submitted that the suspension of Super Metro operations was
not intended to be permanent, but rather to ensure the company operated in
accordance with the law.
Through its Deputy Director and Head of
Safety Compliance Wilson Tuigong, the authority responded to a case filed
before the tribunal by Super Metro, stating that the compliance checks were
necessitated by overwhelming public outcry regarding the conduct of the
vehicles, drivers, and conductors operating under the Sacco.
