Strong winds expected as Tropical Storm IALY hits Kenyan Coast
Tropical Storm IALY hit the Kenyan Coast on Tuesday, bringing with it
rain, storms and strong winds to the region.
According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, IALY, which has
intensified to the Tropical Cyclone stage, is now approximately just 300
kilometres from Mombasa.
"Tropical Storm IALY intensified to the Tropical Cyclone stage,
marking a historic event in the South-West Indian Ocean basin. Positioned just
250 km from Pemba Island and less than 300 km from Mombasa, it's a rare
occurrence within this latitude range," said the Met Department in a
statement.
The weatherman however anticipates that the Tropical Storm will subside
by Wednesday.
"IALY is expected to weaken by Wednesday while bringing rain,
storms, and winds to coastal regions. Stay safe and informed! Moderate to
rough sea conditions are forecasted, with waves of 1.5 to 3.6 meters
expected," said the Met Department.
"A marine forecast warns of strong south-easterly winds and advises
small boats to avoid deep-sea areas. Residents in coastal regions, take
precautions and stay updated with the Met Department."
The Kenya Red Cross has subsequently issued an alert on IALY, urging
Kenyans to remain vigilant in the wake of the increased rains and winds.
"Extremely strong winds have been reported in various coastal areas
of Kenya due to Tropical Storm IALY. In the Majajani area of Kilifi County,
strong winds blew off the roof of a residential house," said the Kenya Red
Cross.
"Electric posts in Casuarina, Olimpia, Madunguni in Malindi and
Garashi in Magarini, Kilifi County, fell down, while two posts in Jilore
Trading Centre caught fire. No casualties have been reported so far. We continue
to urge extra caution."
