Steering Committee reports major strides in Nairobi River clean-up initiative
The Steering Committee on the regeneration of the Nairobi Rivers basin has reported significant progress in restoring the Nairobi River.
In the first meeting chaired by President William Ruto, since the September launch of the Nairobi River Regeneration Initiative (NRRI), the committee tasked with restoring the Nairobi Rivers Basin to its former glory walked into State House with an encouraging progress report, highlighting key achievements.
The steering committee reported the clearance of garbage across 75 km of the 94 km stretch covering the Nairobi, Ngong, and Mathare Rivers, alongside an additional 69 km of the basin being unclogged and 56 km levelled.
"We have done sewer line and clogging," said the committee.
President Ruto, who also met with Nairobi legislators, briefed them on the Nairobi Rivers Basin Regeneration Programme, emphasizing Nairobi's role as both the face of Kenya and a gateway to the East African region, he underscored the city’s special place in the national government's plans.
"This is the face of Kenya; it is important to project image of the country positively," said President Ruto.
The head-of-state further outlined plans to rehabilitate the Nairobi River and restore it to its former glory.
The committee further reported that the program has been progressing well and has already created job opportunities for young people since its start in October 2024.
