Stalemate persists in Machakos as Doctors fail to reach deal with County gov't

Machakos County Governor Wavinya Ndeti.

Patients in Machakos will continue to lack services as the ongoing strike enters its 56th day.

On Wednesday, a meeting between the doctors and new Health CECM Justus Kasivu failed to bear any fruits.

Dr Charles Okumu who is the regional chairperson of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) said that their issues have been known to the County government which has remained silent. Okumu said the county has failed to honour their agreements, leaving patients in dire need.

The doctors said they have been waiting for promotions for the last 2 years but every other time they talk to the county bosses, they received empty promises.

Before the strike, the doctors had issued a 1-month notice urging the county leadership to obey court orders.

Theatres and most wards remained closed as doctors only provide minimum services.

Lawrence Ngovi the County Chief of Staff said only 80 doctors including those on study leave, maternity leave and those reporting to work will be paid.

Ngovi added that the court ordered the striking doctors to provide minimum and essential services, which they are yet to comply.

The Chief of Staff urged the doctors to return to work as there is no money for promotions until next year.
