The government of South Africa is currently probing whether a section of a speech recently read by President Cyril Ramaphosa was authored by ChatGPT.

The development comes amid reports that parts of the speech, read by Ramaphosa last week, appeared to have been generated by the AI platform and not himself or his speechwriters.

Vincent Magwenya, Ramaphosa's spokesperson, has since refuted the claims, further adding that they do not utilize AI tools to generate speech content and that a section of the speech was authored by South Africa's Department of Education on behalf of the Head of State.

He added that should the probe find that the speech was generated by ChatGPT, those responsible will face appropriate action.

"The use of AI to produce speeches or any other material is unacceptable, and action will be taken should these reports prove to be correct,” Magwenya was quoted as saying by a South African news outlet.
