Sonko secures Form One admission at State House Girls for student who lacked school fees
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has come to the aid of a
14-year-old teenage girl who went public to seek financial support to continue with her education.
Margaret Koki from Ekalakala in Matuu, Machakos County, who had been selected to join Form One at State House Girls High School in Nairobi, failed to report to school on February 6, 2023, with fellow students due to lack of school fees.
Koki scored 372 marks in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams at Ikombe Primary School but was stranded at home since her single mother was unable to raise the required school fees for her admission and also buy her the required materials.
Sonko came to her aid after she pleaded for help by posting a recorded video on social media which went viral, asking for help from the former Governor to help her secure a place at State House Girls before the lapse of admissions on Friday.
“Mike Sonko please help me to secure my Form One admission at State House Girls. I was supposed to report to school latest on Monday 6, 2023, but my mother cannot afford the school fees and purchase of books, bedding, and other requirements needed for admission,” she pleaded in the video.
In a rejoinder, Sonko took to his Facebook page asking the child to reach out to him by sharing his contacts.
He later set up a meeting with the child and her mother where he took them shopping as she prepared to be admitted to the school.
Her mother, Caroline Nthenya, 38, thanked Sonko for the generous gesture.
“This is a miracle to me because I had given up on her joining State House Girls. She has promised to work hard in school and she’s aiming to be a pilot after her studies,” said Nthenya.
