Sonko narrates how Ruto helped him after buying a Range Rover previously owned by Moi

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Thursday celebrated President William Ruto's 57th birthday with a throwback narration of how he helped him in 2004.

Sonko took to social media to laud Ruto as a kind man, saying at some point he sold him a Range Rover which almost cost his family.

The flamboyant politician said 19 years ago he bought a Range Rover from Ruto, who then was minister for Agriculture. The Range Rover was previously owned by late retired President Daniel Moi.

Incidentally, at the time Sonko bought the Range Rover from Ruto, Moi's other car was reported missing, and the then-dreaded flying squad were in search of it.

"I vividly remember one morning my wife and children were driving to Uchumi Supermarket in Buruburu when they were spotted and stopped by the flying squad team that had mistaken the car with the stolen one that belonged to the retired president. Out of panic, my wife sped off, but the flying squad team pursued her, arrested her, and confiscated the car at Buruburu police station," Sonko revealed.

He recalls that Moi had been involved in an accident with the same car while driving from Nakuru to Nairobi.

As the car remained detained at Buruburu police station, Sonko who had been introduced to Ruto by a mutual friend, sought audience with him over the matter.

"At this point I sought the intervention of the birthday boy (Ruto) who without hesitation instructed the former PA to Mzee Moi to do a statement denying the reports that the vehicle that was detained at Buruburu police station was not the one stolen from Mzee Moi. My car was later released," he further revealed.

Still, even after the vehicle was released, Sonko says the negative publicity it got in the media brought too much attention to him and his family.

This prompted him to seek to change the car's number plates. Again, here he encountered another hurdle, which took the intervention of Ruto to solve.

"However, since the images and videos of my car were circulated all over the media, around the year 2008, I decided to go to the registrar of motor vehicle offices to request for change of number plate. The registrar declined my request and told me to come with a letter of no objection from the registered owner of the car. I personally went back to look for the then Agriculture minister at his private offices at Transnational Plaza," Sonko added, sharing documents showing Ruto instructing the registrar to change the plates.

He described Ruto as a kind hearted person who listens and helps everyone without any connection between them.
