Someone is engineering coups in Africa using social media - Isaac Mwaura

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura believes powerful individuals are using social media to engineer coups in Africa.

Mwaura opines that there is an active operation that is advocating for military takeovers across the continent, lauding military regimes and censuring leaders from democracy-led nations.

"If you look at TikTok, there seems to be a very silent psychological operation promoting the kind of military takeover," he told NTV on Monday.

"If you talk about certain countries and presidents in comparison with others, I can see a very deliberate effort to indignify certain African leaders making them look old or corrupt and promoting others especially of a military orientation."

Mwaura added that these patterns should be taken seriously "because maybe someone somewhere is engineering coups around African countries."

Social media has been awash with videos propping the leadership of Burkina Faso's interim leader Captain Ibrahim Traore.

The 37-year-old took over the position following a coup which he led against Lieutenant Colonel Paul Henri Damiba in September 2022.

Since taking power, Burkina Faso has played a key role in the withdrawal of three West African states from the regional body ECOWAS.

The State has allied with Niger and Mali, all led through a coup, and have formed the Alliance of Sahel States.
