Some abductees had gone to their boyfriends or girlfriends; MP Kiarie claims

Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie, alias KJ, speaks to Citizen TV on January 14, 2025.

Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie, alias KJ, has called for each abduction incident to be examined on a case-by-case basis to establish the perpetrators.

Speaking on Citizen TV Daybreak, the lawmaker acknowledged that the National Police Service (NPS) was accused of orchestrating some of the abductions witnessed in the past month.

He, however, called out other cases for being stage-managed to cause an uproar in the media space.

"One of the easiest ways for these offenders to get away with murder is for this nation to keep layering our problems. As Gladys (National Assembly deputy speaker) said on matters of abductions would be to examine each abduction on a case-by-case basis," Kiarie pointed out.

"Yes, some cases are pointing a finger at the police. In the same breath, some people have been reported and sensationalised online for a weekend only to turn out that they had travelled to a different county to see their boyfriend or girlfriend."

Upon being prompted to provide relevant examples, the legislator remained cagey in his responses.

"There's a lady who disappeared for a weekend and it turned out they had gone to see a boyfriend in a different city where they lived," KJ stated.

"Is that what she recorded with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)?" Citizen TV's Ayub Abdikadir questioned.

"I have no idea," Kiarie responded.

"You are giving misleading examples that are not factual," Ayub wondered.

"Let's give the example of Maria Sarungi  (Tanzanian activist) who is in the papers today," the MP noted.

Kenya has increasingly become the new den of abductions as State critics have questioned the safety of both its citizens and foreigners.

In the past year, Kenya witnessed a 44 per cent increase in abductions with the majority recorded in Coast (14), Central (8), Nyanza (7) and Nairobi (5).

According to a National Security Report before Parliament, the government, which denied involvement in the kidnappings, plans on developing an adequate response to end the vice.

This includes the provision of modern equipment and expediting the cases in court.
