Siaya Governor Rasanga wants all unclaimed River Yala bodies transferred to Nairobi
Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga
now wants all unclaimed bodies that are lying at the Yala sub-county hospital
mortuary to be transferred to the City Mortuary in Nairobi as investigations
continue to identify them.
According to Governor Rasanga,
the mortuary which has a capacity of keeping only 16 bodies is currently
overstretched while unclaimed bodies currently stand at 24, hence the need for
the transfer.
Rasanga stated that they
believe those bodies do not belong to the people from Siaya since nobody has
been reported missing from the county.
The governor, who addressed
the press in his office on Friday, revealed that the Yala morgue currently has
a total of 38 bodies, including the 24 unclaimed ones, recovered from River
Yala over the last one year.
He stated that the number is
way beyond the capacity that the mortuary should be keeping at any given time,
thereby compromising the quality of preservation at the facility.
Rasanga added his voice in
calling upon the government investigative agencies to carry out in-depth
investigations to unravel the circumstances under which those bodies ended up
in the waters of River Yala so that an appropriate action can be taken against
the perpetrators.
He further appealed that the
investigations be expedited to facilitate prompt identification of the bodies
and where possible they be released to the relatives and those still unclaimed
be disposed of in accordance with the law.
