Siaya County to cover hospital bills, burial expenses of protests victims

Siaya leaders hold burning candles during a vigil in honour of protests victims in Migori on July 26, 2023.

Siaya Governor James Orengo has announced that the County government will cater for the hospital bills and burial expenses of victims of police brutality during anti-government protests.

Speaking in Siaya town during a prayer vigil held in memory of the people who were shot and killed by the police, Orengo said his administration will waive all the hospital bills of victims.

He added that they shall also cater for the burial expenses of those who were shot and killed, saying the initiative will extend to other counties in Nyanza region.

Orengo condemned the excessive force used by the police during the anti-government protests, warning that the Kenya Kwanza administration should know that they shall bear the responsibility.

“There is no essence in ordering the police to use live bullets on un-armed protesters,” he noted.

He called on Kenyans to stay strong, exuding confidence that problems will be solved if they stand firm in their demands for economic reforms.

The Governor said the Azimio coalition has only taken a break for now, and continue with the push for economic reforms alongside other issues that are affecting the country.

He asked their supporters to get ready for the resumption of anti-government demonstrations anytime that they shall be announced.
