Shock as Magistrate shot by police officer during court session in Makadara

A Magistrate was on Thursday afternoon shot and injured at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi.

According to police, Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti was shot by a police officer during an active court session where she was delivering a ruling in a case involving the wife of the officer.

Other police officers who were present during the incident responded and fatally shot the senior officer identified as Chief Inspector Samson Kipruto, killing him on the spot.

The suspect is reported to have been infuriated by the Magistrate’s decision to cancel the bond granted to his wife.

“The Magistrate cancelled the bond for an accused person who had jumped bond and had failed to offer satisfactory explanations for jumping bond. Immediately this decision was pronounced, a person shot at the Magistrate and injured her on the hip,” said the Judiciary in a statement on the incident.

The officer's wife, Jenniffer Wairimu aged 48 years was an accused in a case of obtaining money by false pretence amounting to Ksh.2.9 million. She had pleaded to be released out on cash bail but the court did not grant.

"He entered inside the court through the magistrate's door and fired shots towards the magistrate injuring her on the chest and left hip," a report from police indicated.

Detectives have since visited and cleared the scene as investigations into the incident continue.

“As the Judiciary family, we wish our colleague a quick recovery. We also send our condolences to the family of the officer who lost his life in this unfortunate incident,” reads the statement issued by Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Winfridah Mokaya.
