Senator Orwoba recommends establishment of GBV desks in hospitals and courts

Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba terms President William Ruto's allocation of Ksh.100 million for sensitization on Gender Based Violence as a misplaced priority as the focus should be on interventions such as setting up desks in hospitals and courts to help victims.

While addressing members of the press at Parliament Buildings on Monday, Orwoba advocated for GBV desk in hospitals to get the names of the victims and perpetrators easily instead of holding public barazas to sensitize Kenyans on GBV.

"In as much we support the program, the budget should be focus on establishing hospital desk and small court claims instead of dividing among 102 women senators and women members of parliament as a one off program in all constituencies," Orwoba stated.

The Senator argues that the GBV cases should take less than 6 months.

“102 women and constituencies are targeted for advocacy to make GBV efficient and gender courts effective. I feel this is where we should focus on instead of convincing victims to raise alarms and give attendants tokens,” says the Senator.

According to Orwoba, a number of people have been convicted in GBV cases but justice has never been met.

“If the process is expedited, perpetrators will fear.”

Orwoba argued that expediting GBV cases will discourage perpetrators of the vice.

She further commended the formation of a technical working group team that is meant to look into GBV and femicide cases.
