Senator Mungatana files censure motion against DP Gachagua, cites misconduct
Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has filed a
censure motion in the Senate to discuss Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's character.
Addressing the media on Monday, Mungatana stated that DP Gachagua has breached the law provisions on how he should conduct himself in office and administer his roles, accusing him of disregarding his oath of office.
"Article 260 of the constitution of Kenya categorizes the deputy president as a state officer whose conduct and behaviour shall abide by the provisions of article 75 of the constitution of Kenya and the general leadership and integrity code for state officers, contained in the leadership Act," submitted Mungatana.
Mungatana noted that Gachagua, since assuming office, has made utterances that continue to create tensions and divisions among Kenyans.
"The public utterances made by Rigathi have marginalized sections of Kenyans, created and continue to heighten tension among different ethnic communities in Kenya," he said.
Among these utterances, Mungatana added, include matters on employment opportunities in the public service, allocation of resources to the devolved units and incitement if a section of Kenyans to disobey lawful directives by some county governments.
He argued that the aforementioned incidences amount to misconduct and contravention of the provisions of Article 75 of the constitution of Kenya, therefore demeaning the office he occupies.
"The Senate pursuant to the standing order 101 section 1, expresses its displeasure and disappointment with the conduct of Hon. Rigathi Gachagua as the Deputy President of Kenya and therefore we need to censure him", adds Mungatana.
This comes amid speculations that a section of Kenyan leaders are hatching a plan to file an impeachment motion in parliament.
Gachagua and his boss President William Ruto have reportedly severed ties and are not sailing on the same boat.
Gachagua has even intimated that he is being humiliated by 'Ruto's men' and the president remains tight-lipped about it.
