Nyandarua Senator Muhia Methu has written to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, asking him to convene a special sitting to discuss the recent abduction cases of government critics.

Methu, in a letter dated December 27, 2024 and received by the Senate’s clerk on December 30, says the forced abductions and disappearances of young government critics are of critical national importance.

“This matter has raised deep national concern as it infringes on the fundamental human rights and freedoms enshrined in our Constitution, including the freedom of expression, association, and the right to life and security,” the senator writes.

Methu cites the National Police Service (NPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)’s recent denial of responsibility for the abductions, saying it points to a possible existence of an organised criminal syndicate operating outside the police inspector-general's command.

“This syndicate appears to target and silence critics of the current administration. Mr. Speaker, this House must take the necessary steps to demand immediate action by the government to stop these illegal and unconstitutional practices,” the senator adds.

“Given the urgency and gravity or this matter, I request you to convene this special sitting to debate and adopt actionable recommendations to safeguard the rights and freedoms of all Kenyans.”

On Monday, the families of five men among those abducted in December over what has been perceived as social media posts criticising President William Ruto and his government confirmed that their kin had been released.

They include cartoonist Gideon Kibet alias Kibet Bull, Billy Mwangi, Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli and Rony Kiplangat.

Kibet, who was abducted by suspected security officials on December 24, 2024, shortly after meeting Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah at the latter’s office in Nairobi, said he was dumped in the Luanda area of Vihiga County in the wee hours of Monday.

Kiplangat, abducted in Nairobi, was found in Machakos County, while Kavuli, who was abducted in Ngong was found in Kitale. Peter Muteti was found in the Nairobi city centre.

However, Steve Mbisi, who was also reported missing, had yet to be found.
