Senator Karungo insists Gachagua impeachment was flawed, legislators threatened

In an interview with Spice Fm, the Kiambu Senator questioned why Gachagua was subjected to an impeachment process before exploring other available legal and political options to handle issues raised against him. 

He said the impeachment process at the National Assembly and Senate was marred by bribery and intimidation. 

“You could hear someone say ‘I have a letter from KRA demanding this and that….I have a business that they would send people to dig in.’ When government wants to find something they will come with all allegations,” said the lawmaker. 

Karungo said legislators were trying to paint Gachagua in a negative light to justify his impeachment. 

"That is what I call hypocrisy of the highest order. You rush to please some quarters or protect their businesses or protect their monies. Because there was a lot of intimidation,” he said. 

Karungo has openly defended Gachagua, arguing that the accusations against the DP were made to undermine his role and influence in the government.

He insists that the impeachment motion lacks evidence and is instead an attempt by political adversaries to create division within the administration. 

He asserted that Gachagua has been a dedicated leader who has stood firmly for the interests of the people of Kenya and not just those from Mt. Kenya region.

“The claims being used to impeach the Deputy President are nothing but political theatrics. They are not based on facts but rather on the desire to weaken his position and disrupt the unity of the government,” Karungo stated. 

The Senator's remarks come as the impeached Deputy President makes effort to block his ouster in Court. 

On Friday, President William Ruto nominated Interior CS Kithure Kindiki as his deputy. Kindiki got an approval from parliament, and is the DP-nominee awaiting the court’s direction on his fate.
