Senate to hear impeachment charges against DP Gachagua today
This follows a formal notice issued in accordance with the Constitution's Article 145 (3)(a) and Senate Standing Order 78(1).
The session, which is set to begin at 9:30 a.m., has been convened to discuss the impeachment proceedings against the embattled second-in-command.
The Senate meets just hours after the National Assembly impeached the Deputy President following a day-long debate.
In a historic vote on Tuesday evening, 281 MPs voted in favour of the impeachment motion against Gachagua. Forty-four legislators voted against the motion, and one abstained.
The Special Motion, introduced by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, outlined 11 charges against the Deputy President, including gross violation of the Constitution, undermining the President and the Cabinet, undermining Devolution, and compromising judicial independence by publicly attacking a judge.
Additional accusations included making inciteful statements, committing economic crimes, spreading false, malicious, divisive, and inciteful remarks, publicly insubordinating the President, and persistently bullying State and public officers.
