Selfish! Kenyans angered by how efficient their leaders can be on mundane matters - and inept on important issues

Kenyans have noted, and with an overwhelming amount of concern, the speed with which leaders from both Houses (National Assembly and Senate) moved when it came to a political matter that needed their undivided attention and utmost dedication.

Since the Rigathi Gachagua impeachment trial began, from the National Assembly, where MPs debated his crimes to the Senate, where his fate was ultimately sealed, Kenyans have noted that parliamentarians and senators have displayed an unprecedented dedication to their duties, swarming both Houses on crucial days and staying late into the night, for a matter affecting just their political world.

Some members of Parliament, notorious for missing consecutive sittings and still drawing salaries, this time were prominently present at the August House, appearing to eschew their private businesses to attend to a matter they were obviously influenced to.

Normally, embarrassing scenes manifest themselves when sessions, in both houses, have to be adjourned due to lack of quorum as elected leaders stay away from their duties, forcing the Speaker to call off the day's planned motions and, therefore, plunging the country to further developmental procrastination.

But over the last two weeks, Kenyans have witnessed an envigorated National Assembly - and Senate - as these same people, elected to represent the people and push bills meant to propel the people's welfare, gathered in their indomitable numbers as they stayed attentively focused on a mundane matter - removing the Deputy President from office.

A lot of Kenyans were understandably enraged by the vigour and robustness displayed by their representatives when it came to a matter that would only benefit them directly - and the apparent lethargy they display when it came to defending the people, standing up for their electorates and upholding the will of the masses.

"So these people can actually perform their duties? And with such speed and effectiveness?" someone asked. "It's so funny that whenever they're required to debate and pass important bills, they're almost always unavailable. Every. One. Of. Them."

For instance, on the 15th of October, just a day before the Gachagua impeachment hit the Senate, the official X handle for the Kenyan Senate tweeted: "The Senate of Kenya morning session has been adjourned due to lack of quorum pursuant to the Senate Standing Order 40 subsection 2."

Shoba Gatimu, a well-known X personality, took the opportunity to educate Kenyans on the carelessness - and utter crassness - their leaders have the tendency to project, listing down all the crucial bills that were to be tabled at the Senate on that particular day - which, unfortunately, saw the Senate adjourn the sessions due to a lack of quorum.

He tweeted: "Wadau mnajua what was supposed to be in Senate today?1. Cancer Prevention and Control Bill 2022. 2. Public Finance Management Bill 2023 3. Fire and Rescue Services Bill 2023. 4. Consolidation of bursary funds for equitable access to education... And yet, there's no QUORUM. SMH! "

Someone else noted, "I wonder what would happen to a teacher if they missed school for one day without permission.  Or what would happen to YOU if you missed work two days in a row. Here is someone who sits in the Senate less than twice a week and still misses! Blow up these fools!"

Gachagua's impeachment, a matter which clearly had no particular benefit to the majority of Kenyans still struggling with SHA registration and pressing financial woes, remarkably saw all the leaders crawl out the woodwork, all pouring into either House to deliberate on a matter they must have obviously been financially induced to attend.

Alex Mbogo said, "These lazy narcissists are only in the Senate because they've been paid to do so! Whenever there's no brown envelope doing the rounds, they disappear to run their private business. Kenyans, you elected the worst batch of leaders! A thieving mob!"

On the first day of the Gachagua impeachment hearing in the Senate, as lawyers argued out their case and member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse endured a mortifying cross-examination, all the Senators stayed in their seats, diligently following the occurrences until some minutes close to midnight, none appearing fatigued or angling to go home.

"Oh, so they can actually sit up until midnight to discuss a matter affecting their stomachs? Oh, how I wish they could stay up this late to discuss Adani, the university funding program, SHA, abductions and youth joblessness!"
