Section of Mt Kenya leaders urge President Ruto to stop Gachagua impeachment
A section of Mount Kenya leaders are now blaming
President William Ruto for the woes that are bedevilling his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua.
While vowing to oppose the impeachment motion laid to the
floor of the National Assembly Tuesday afternoon, MPs from Murang’a County
asked the President to intervene and stop the impeachment.
Led by Murang’a Senator Joe Nyutu, the MPs challenged the
President to stop the ‘persecution’ against his Deputy.
“We know that he has the ability to stop this motion, we
know parliament is independent, but MPs listen to their party leader,” Nyutu
said.
“We have not seen anything that Rigathi has done, that
Ruto as DP never did to President Uhuru… Uhuru never tried to impeach him, this
is something that we do not take lightly, and we know that without his blessing
this motion would never have been tabled.” He added.
While warning the ODM Party which has been incorporated
in the broad based government not to support the impeachment motion, Nyutu said
it would appear that the only reason they were brought in government is to deal
with Rigathi.
He said, “For us divorcing Rigathi is divorcing the whole
mountain.”
The leaders pointed out that the raging issues on the
impeachment debate is simply a debate between Gachagua and UDA MPs were mainly
internal party issues which can be adjudicated by the internal dispute
mechanisms.
“He will be condemned unheard. It’s on that basis that we
are seeking and beseeching our fellow MPs to give dispute resolution mechanism
a chance,” said Kigumo MP Joseph Kamau.
The motion seeking to impeach the DP was formally tabled
by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse this afternoon accusing him of 11 accounts.
The motion that was signed by 291 members was approved by
Speaker Moses Wetangula for having met the threshold.
