Second suspect in murder of DCI detective in Kayole shot dead
According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), John Kamau aka Farouk died in a Tuesday morning gunfight with officers after defying orders to surrender.
"Armed with the CZ pistol that fired the fatal shots which took detective Mayaka’s life, the bloodthirsty thug had emerged from his door at an apartment in Njiru Sub-County and shot at one of our men injuring him on his left thigh," read part of the statement.
"This prompted his colleagues to retaliate with speed and efficiency killing the miscreant on the spot in the dawn operation conducted on the second floor of flat B4-124, by an elite team of sleuths drawn from the Crime Research & Intelligence Bureau."
Farouk's firearm was recovered alongside 12 rounds of ammunition and assorted mobile phones suspected to have been violently acquired from victims of crime in the city.
DCI further states that ballistic reports have revealed that the firearm is linked to over five armed robberies staged in Nairobi and Kiambu Counties in the last one year.
"The robberies targeted MPESA outlets in the populous residential areas of Kayole, Buru Buru, Dandora and Dagoretti," wrote DCI.
"Detectives have since established that the recovered firearm had been violently robbed from an aide to a former Cabinet Secretary, in a robbery incident reported on November 17, 2021 in Ngong, Kajiado County."
Farouk's death comes after the arrest of Alex Wanjiru, 23, another suspect in the murder.
Wanjiru was flushed out of his hideout at his grandmother's home in Ruthingiti, Kiambu County, and his getaway motorcycle was impounded.
Meanwhile a manhunt for the third suspect identified as Henry Njihia, believed to be armed and dangerous, has been launched.
Constable David Mayaka shot dead by three armed robbers in Kayole, Nairobi County on August 10 while changing a flat tyre in the company of his wife.
CCTV footage showed his killers riding by on a motorcycle, opening fire, and shooting Mayaka in the abdomen, as well as his wife Hellen Kemunto in the leg.
