Sakaja pelted with stones after visiting Toi market following fire incident
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja was on Saturday
afternoon pelted with stones when he made a visit to the scene of an early
morning fire incident at Toi market.
The dawn inferno, whose cause is yet to be
established, left four people dead and traders counting huge losses.
Sakaja, in a video making rounds online, can be
seen surrounded by his bodyguards who formed a protective shield around him while
stones aimed at his head flew in the air.
As the flurry of stones became too
unbearable, the security team was forced to fire in the air to disperse the
angry crowd.
Some of the affected traders who spoke to
Citizen Digital expressed anger at the county boss saying they want repairs
done at the market once and for all.
They accused Governor Sakaja of visiting the
market when it burned last year and making a long list of promises to fix it,
but failed to do so.
The traders also criticized the Governor over
the slow response time of the county fire response team, saying the inferno could’ve
been stopped early enough hence the deaths prevented.
Kibera Member of Parliament Peter Orero and
his Embakasi East counterpart Babu Owino also visited the traders earlier on
and engaged them.
