Safaricom has slashed 5G router prices by 60%, in an aim to make super-fast internet connectivity more accessible to its customers across 35 counties.

The price for the routers is now Ksh.9,999, down from the previous Ksh.25,000.

In a statement released to media houses on November 1, Safaricom CEO, Peter Ndegwa, emphasized the company's commitment to driving digital transformation.

He highlighted the potential of 5G technology to bridge the digital divide in underserved communities, improve access to critical services like healthcare, and stimulate economic growth by connecting small businesses to new opportunities.

“As a digital lifestyle enabler, we are excited about a 5G future, which makes it possible to close the digital divide in underserved communities, provide access to critical services such as healthcare or spur economic growth by connecting small businesses to new opportunities. By increasing 5G coverage, we are enhancing Kenya’s best internet network and empowering our customers to start exploring the possibilities of 5G,” he stated.

The mobile service provider is also offering an option for eligible customers, allowing them to sign an 18-month contract and gain access to the 5G router for free.

Moreover, the expansion of 5G services has resulted in increased Wi-Fi volumes for home consumer packages, offering a variety of data options.

Customers can now choose from 400GB for Ksh.3,499, 800GB for Ksh.5,999, or 1500GB for Ksh.9,999.

"5G Wi-Fi for business offers unlimited packages starting at Ksh.4,000 for 10 Mbps in response to the different need for a business for always on connectivity," the statement read.

Safaricom has also partnered with Huawei to establish three 5G experience centers to offer virtual reality gaming zones, smart home and enterprise solutions, and speed-testing booths, which according to the mobile service provider, will allow Kenyans to experience the capabilities of 5G firsthand.

In addition, the communications giant has introduced 5G data bundles, enabling over 500,000 customers with 5G smartphones to enjoy ultra-fast browsing speeds.

New 5G customers can also claim a complimentary 5GB data bundle through the My Safaricom App, making the transition to 5G even more appealing.

Counties where 5G is now present in select towns include Bomet, Busia, Isiolo, Kitui, Mandera, Migori, Tharaka-Nithi, Trans Nzoia, Homa Bay, West Pokot, Embu, Kirinyaga, Muranga and Turkana.
