Ruto's policies taking Kenya back to rich vs poor era, no middle-class - Senator Olekina

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina speaking with Citizen TV on January 8, 2024.

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has opined that the policies President William Ruto is implementing under his tenure are taking the nation back to decadent social class divides.

In his view, the unsavory taxation policies President Ruto has introduced in the past year will dissolve the middle-class citizens and create a distinct divide between Kenyans: the rich and the poor.

Speaking with Citizen TV on Monday, the legislator argued that the economic crisis the nation has been plunged into will continue worsening if Ruto fails to introduce a remedy to the malady.

"You might think that by raising taxes you'll collect more money but what will happen is that people will lay off employees, people will close off businesses," argued Olekina.

"Kibaki brought up the middle class that's when you saw people driving vehicles, having mortgages and what Ruto is doing is that he is taking back to the time where it was the poor versus the rich."

The Senator further shifted blame at the Kenyan Members of Parliament whom he claimed have been emasculated by the Executive and have absconded their oversight role.

He argued that the government has been compromised by several leaders who are fixated on graft and looting public money.

"The current administration has managed to muscle its way through the legislative arm of government. None of the Kenya Kwanza MPs read the legislative proposals they just come to say "tunapitisha" and when it is passed into law they complain of increased taxes," he said.

"We have an incompetent administration which is coupled by the fact that greed for personal wealth such that people are not looking at the people who elected them."
