Ruto pledges ICT hubs in every ward, leveraging CDF and KPLC lines
In a town hall session with university students on Sunday at the KICC, Ruto said he has held discussions with MPs who control CDF, and they have agreed to use the funds to set up the ICT hubs.
"We have changed the law and if you talk to your MP we are using CDF to build an ICT hub in every ward for three reasons: to make sure ICT infrastructure is available to citizens including students, we have a big programme on digital jobs and we want to encourage digital commerce and we want government services to be available in that space," Ruto said.
The President further revealed that his government has started delivering free internet to citizens using KPLC power lines.
"Every place where we have Kenya Power lines it will be possible to have internet. We have already rolled out that plan," Ruto added.
Ruto was responding to questions on how students will access ICT services in areas that have poor internet reach.
Explaining the new university funding model, the President revealed he has held consultations with university vice chancellors, and they have told him the model is working.
He said the next thing is for his administration to explain to the public why the model is necessary, amid concerns that the new model is making university education too expensive for Kenyan students.
