Ruto, Gachagua miss out on salary increment as SRC reviews pay for State, public officers

President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua will not receive a salary increase in the 2023/24 salary increment for public and state officers.

In a draft gazettement seen by Citizen Digital on Wednesday, Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) chairperson Lyn Mengich stated that the commission honoured Ruto's request that his and his deputy's salaries not be reviewed.

This means that Ruto's salary will remain at Ksh.1.44 million, and Gachagua's salary will remain at Ksh.1.22 million.

Meanwhile, the SRC has approved a salary increase for other state and public officers that will take effect from July 1, 2023 to July 1, 2024.

Cabinet Secretaries, for instance, will have their salaries increased by about 3.5% to Ksh. 957,000 from 924,000.

The increment is, however, lower than the amount proposed by SRC, which would have seen CSs receive a monthly salary of Ksh. 990,000.

The proposal also wanted the President to earn Ksh.1.54 million and the DP to earn Ksh.1.36 million.

Salary payments totaling Ksh.21.7 billion will be made to both state and public officials.

While dismissing the salary increase, President Ruto maintained that the wage disparity between low- and high-earning public servants is enormous and should be narrowed.
